What Style Of Landscaping Is Best For Your Yard?

by Matthew Fields

There are several reasons to change up your landscaping. Maybe you want to make better use of the space. Maybe your yard is just looking a little sad. Regardless of the reason, there are plenty of different ways to update your landscaping.

While you might think that a traditional landscape design is boring, it is traditional because it looks great on a variety of homes. Even within this space, you can draw inspiration from a variety of different cultures to bring a personal touch to your yard. You still need to keep your local climate in mind though. If you live in an area with cold winters, a tropically-inspired yard will be hard to pull off since those types of plants are rarely cold-resistant. In the same way, you should avoid plants that require a large amount of water if you live in an area with frequent droughts. While sprinklers can ensure that the plants get enough water, many cities are starting to ban the use of sprinklers on certain days in order to conserve water.

Speaking of water conservation, a very non-traditional style of lawn is one that puts sustainability at the forefront. The simplest way to do this is usually to replace your grass with a type of groundcover that uses very little water so you can avoid using sprinklers to keep your yard looking great. Many homeowners go further and choose edible plants and berry bushes to decorate the space, integrating the fresh food into their diets.

There are a few varieties of formal gardens that have become popular. The one that first comes to mind is often the European style, with its intricately patterned and immaculate hedges. The downside of this style is that it often requires a large amount of space and maintenance. However, you can echo this design within your planting beds to get this sort of feel.

The second style of formal garden is the Japanese zen garden. This is best in a larger space, but a small zen garden is also a possibility. This style also requires quite a bit of water, in the form of small fish ponds, so keep that in mind if you want to go this direction.

As you can see, there are plenty of different styles of landscaping you can choose for your yard. Maybe there are some that you haven't considered before. Choosing the right style for your yard can be tough, but now you should have some idea of which direction you want to go.
