Skyscraper construction often requires the use of very large cranes. However, it would be impractical for most cranes to be lifted to the top of the skyscraper and then lowered after they are no longer needed. As a result, skyscraper construction requires to use of specialized cranes.
Cranes On Top of Buildings
To bring the crane down from the skyscraper, the crane usually needs to be dismantled and taken down piece by piece. The smaller pieces can simply be carried down by the construction manager, while the larger pieces often have to be lowered using a system of pulleys. Holding the Crane in Place
To hold the tower crane in place to prevent it from tilting over, the crane needs to be bolted to a concrete base. The nuts are so heavy that they have to be torqed using a hydraulic wrench. Given that there are no wires to hold the crane in place, many would think that the crane would simply tilt over. Fortunately, the concrete base weighs hundreds of thousands of pounds, creating a base that is not likely to move.
Raising the Crane
The mast connects to the base and allows the crane to have the reach it is known for. Masts are continually added to the crane until it has reached the necessary height. The mast sections must be continually added as the skyscraper grows in height so that the crane can deliver the supplies to the construction workers. To do this, the workers need to place a weight on the jib to balance the crane. The slewing unit has to be removed so that the new section of the mast can then be attached. Hydraulic rams place the slewing unit up. Then, the crane is used to lift the new mast into place so that the crane can reach a new height.
Connected to the mast is the slewing unit used to allow the crane to rotate. Then, attached to the slewing unit is the boom. The crane is operated from the operator's cabin. This part and the slewing unit are usually the heaviest parts of the crane and the most difficult parts to attach.
